The Association of Rabbis & Cantors
The Association of Rabbis and Cantors is pleased to announce the 2018 Liturgy Awards.

These awards are open to all matriculated AJR Rabbinical and Cantorial students.

All entries must be received by Feb 19, 2018
Winners will be announced on April 16, 2018 at the Senior Legacy Program

Goals:
* To stimulate the creation of original liturgy and/or programming
* To recognize student achievement in these areas
* To create materials for use in the professional rabbinate/cantorate
* To facilitate Alumni/student interaction in the area of professional skills

Awards
Up to two awards, the Rabbi Hershel J. Matt Creative Liturgy Award and the Rabbi Chana Timoner Creative Liturgy Award, will be presented prior to ordination. Each winner will receive $250. An applicant can only receive one award per year. Honorable mention certificates may also be awarded.

Rules
Students may submit one or more entries in the following categories:
  1. Original Liturgy - An original prayer, music setting for a piece of traditional liturgy, a d'var Tefillah, a short d'var Torah, or a suggestion for a new type of ritual ceremony. The submission must be suitable for use by a rabbi or cantor working in a professional capacity. A liturgical entry does not have to be limited to a congregational setting.
  2. Original Programming - A description of an original program that has been used in a professional context by the student submitting the entry. A programming entry does not have to be limited to a congregational setting.

Material submitted may have been created as part of a classroom assignment or for use in a professional situation. Entirety of submission is to be the work product of the submitter except where expressly noted.

Criteria for Award Selection
A panel of AJR alumni rabbis and cantors will review the entries. The anonymous judges will base their decision on the following criteria:
  • Practicality - appropriateness for use in "real life" situations
  • Originality - creative approach to the situation
  • Ease of Use - easy implementation within the setting for which it is intended
  • Overall quality of the entry
